Jobs & College Majors for Statisticians

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is equivalent to a one-semester, introductory, non-calculus based college course in statistics.

The topics for A. P. Statistics are divided into four major themes:

  • exploratory analysis
  • planning a study
  • probability
  • statistical analysis.

During the school year students will be given the opportunities to discuss homework problems from the text, evaluate and learn from the errors they made on teacher graded chapter tests that are formatted with the AP Exam in mind, take and self-evaluate past years free response problems, and work in pairs or groups collecting/creating, analyzing, and coming to conclusions about the significance of data.  Classroom discussion pertaining to topics such as methodology and inferences is supported by students working together in small groups. Students who successfully complete the course and examination may receive college credit and/or advanced placement for a one-semester introductory college statistics course.

Our AP Exam will be Thursday, May 12 from noon to 4 pm.  You are expected to give your very best effort to be prepared to successfully take this exam.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

No one can pass this class for you.  You need to:

  • Do in-class assignments.  Take and REVIEW class notes.

  • Complete homework assignments, activities and written projects as assigned.

  • Prepare and study for chapter quizzes and tests, final exams and the AP exam.

  • Get help when having difficulty with a topic.  I am available after school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:45-3:15.  I also recommend that you form or join a study group
  • Register for and take the associated AP Exam. Students who register for and sit for the exam will automatically be exempted from the course exam in May. Students who choose not to register, or, who register but do not actually take the exam will be required to take the course exam as administered by the teacher.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Your student needs your good parenting skills to insure his/her success:

  • Make sure your student has time to study.  Do not allow work or extra-curricular activities to overload his/her schedule.

  • Ask your student about the class.  Have him/her show you some of the work and explain what is being done in the lesson.

  • Visit our class Wiki often to view assignments and announcements.  You do not need to "request access" to view the Wiki.

  • Encourage your student to see me as needed.  I am available after school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:45-3:15.   I also recommend that your student forms or joins a study group.

BEHAVIORAL CLASS RULES

It is the right of each student to be provided an atmosphere in which the learning process is not hampered.  To assure a proper learning environment in my classroom, the following rules will be followed:

  • BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS AT ALL TIMES.

  • Be in your seat, working on the warm-up, when the bell rings.

  • NO gum, food, or drink (except water) in the classroom unless we are using it for data.

  • NO radios, iPods, cell phones, or hand-held games of any kind unless we are using it to research or collect data.  Calculators and computers may be used for class work only--no games.
  • Be kind to your textbook and all school owned resources.  We use them for several years.  Do NOT write in them.

GRADED COURSE COMPONENTS

Semester Exam

Students who register for and take the Statistics AP Exam will automatically be exempted from the semester exam in May. Students who choose not to register, or, who register but do not actually take the exam will be required to take the course exam as administered by the teacher.

Chapter Tests

will be cumulative with a combination of multiple choice and free response questions as appropriate to prepare for the exam in the spring.

Class Work & Quizzes

will be assigned almost daily and will often be done in groups.  Credit will be earned for successful completion of the class work; this includes warm-up problems at the beginning of class.
(That is, ANYTHING done in class may be collected for a grade.)  Quizzes will be completed individually.

Homework:

will be assigned daily and credit will be earned for completion.  Homework must be done on loose leaf paper (no spiral notebooks) so it can be collected. Assorted homework problems will be collected each Friday; this includes the even problems that are done together in class.  There will be quizzes on questions taken directly from the reading guide for each chapter.

  • Reading Guides and Flash Cards
will be collected every "Test Day" and will count for daily grades in the Homework category.
Students scoring a B on the chapter test will be exempt from the Flash Cards for the next chapter.
Students scoring an A on the chapter test will be exempt from both the Flash Cards AND the Reading Guide.
  • Wiki Assignments & Projects

will be assigned.  These will count for daily grades in the Homework category.
  • Instructional Videos on www.EduCanon.com
will count for daily grades in the Homework category.  These videos and the accompanying quiz should be completed by the due date in order for students to be prepared for classroom instruction the next day.

WEIGHTS FOR GRADED COURSE COMPONENTS

Each quarter there will be 4-5 chapter tests and a final exam.  Tests will consist of both multiple choice and free response questions.  Once a test is taken, it MAY NOT be retaken for a higher score.  If you are absent you will be required to take the test on the day you return to class.  Final exams will cover the entire semester’s work to date.

Grades will be weighted according to the following categories

  • Tests (Summative)

70%

  • Daily Grades (Formative)

  • Class Work & Quizzes

15%

  • Homework & Video Quizzes

15%

MATERIALS NEEDED DAILY

  • Your textbook & TI83+ or TI84+ calculator**
  • 3 inch 3-ring binder, loose leaf paper & dividers
  • pencil & GOOD eraser
  • highlighters, colored pens/pencils/markers
crayola markers, not permanent markers or sharpies because they will bleed through the paper
  • ruler & index cards
  • glue stick or scotch tape & hole reinforcements
  • correction tape (instead of white-out)
  • ear buds or head phones

**A TI-84+ is recommended.
A TI-83+ will work if you already have one, but is missing some functions of the 84 that are quite helpful and it has less RAM than the TI-84+.
